It is the Borghese Castle at Pratica di Mare, near the coast of the Lazio, the region where Rome is located. The place immediately evokes episodes that have their roots in the mythology and in the very origins of Rome, whereas the brave hero Aeneas, fleeing from Troy, founded his city: the ancient Lavinium. And it is precisely here, using also some of the remains of this archaic city centre, that around the XI century the first fortification was built.
With a pentagonal base, over the centuries around the castle was added a real village, with shops, guard posts and houses. The defensive walls that helps to protect the citadel but also the whole surrounding area, were used in the past as an agricultural area or they became perfect locations to accommodate local activities such as fishing, processing of silk or of leather, or other activities related to fruit and vegetable or livestock. The entire area was purchased by the Borghese only in the 1617, five centuries later, about the construction of the first architectural unit. One of the new areas owned by this famous and noble family, which came from Tuscany. Then Camillo Borghese, at the beginning of the XX century, completely redevelopped the castle, the village and the church of St. Peter the Apostle. The whole area was also partially destroyed by the bombardments of the World War II, but later it was partly rebuilt and modernized.
But after centuries the whole village, still with its local atmosphere and medieval atmosphere, lives and pulsates thanks to the activities relating to events or film and television production. An exceptional location, in short, to a place selected by the Borghese as a perfect location (close to the sea good air to breathe and great for the summer) but also for its economic value (all the activities written above, relating to fishing and to farming in general). It would be nice to live here, right?
