THE-"ISTORIATI"-PALACES-OF-ROME:-GREAT-BEAUTIES

In Rome there are not just archeological monuments and incredible masterpieces, if it is true that walking along the narrow roads of the city centre you can find something like that...

It is the facade of one of the frescoed palaces of Rome, buildings which became a fashion style in Rome, mainly around the Renaissance age. In this case this palace was erected two centuries ago and it is set in Via dei Due Macelli, very close to the Spanish Steps. The main characteristics are the nice and strange figures on the walls: "grottesche", mythological and horrific monsters, natural elements. In the XIX century this fashion became famous again, in a modern reproduction of the ancient tastes. The italian word to name the palaces with frescoed and painted walls is "istoriato", and in Rome there are a lot of them! They are mainly situated in the historical and central districts of Rome. Why? Try to think as a man of the Renaissance age: if you are a member of an important and wealthy family you would like to display your opulence. Your rooms could be full of pieces, works of art made by masters and incredible furnitures. But the ordinary people, the commoners could not understand how rich you could be, because they could not be your guests. So, if the population could not admire the stucco and plaster decorations of the rooms, they could appreciate your opulence looking at the fantastic frescos on the facades of your private properties. In this way this noble man can display his wealth and opulence. But it is also the main problem faced by those wonderful palaces: over the centuries, due to the atmospheric conditions, some of the original colours and decorations are gone. It is a pity, but it is also true that still today a lot of them could be seen, making Rome a wonderful city. #unaguidaturisticaroma #romeisus #atourguiderome #rome #roma #palazzo #palace #arte #art
