RUINS-OF-THE-TEMPLE-OF-BELLONA

Sometimes in Rome the artifacts could explain us something about ancient rituals and strange facts...

In Rome some marble fragments or the podium of a temple could reveal us several things. For example, nearby the Theatre of Marcellus and next to the wonderful columns of the Temple of Apollo, around the 30’s of the last century a small podium was found. For the archeologists it is what we have today about the Temple of Bellona, which was a sort of female version of Mars. She was an italic goddess, and sometimes she was also depicted as the Queen of the Underground. Mainly in the archaic times the Senators used to meet here with the ambassadors of the foreign kingdoms. Always here the Senators used to speak about possible wars, and in the Temple of Bellona were also met the vips of the other cities and villages. In this building the Senators used to greet the proconsuls before their missions in the far Provinces. As you can see the Temple of Bellona had many purposes, and maybe it is not a case if it was erected at the end of the III century BC by the consul Appio Claudio Cieco (the man of the Appian Way), in an intense time for Rome. Keep in mind how Bellona was also the Goddess of the War, and between the III and the II century BC Rome fought several wars, usually winning them! Anyway the Temple of Bellona was related to strange rituals which started at the archaic times until, for the literary sources, the II century AD when the emperor was Marcus Aurelius. In front of the temple there was the so called "Columna Bellica" (the "Military Columns"): it was a columns, maybe stone or wooden made, sets inside a sacred corral. A member of the "feziali" college used to throw a spear inside the corral. Why? The "feziale" was a minister who had several purposes. One of them was to declare war, in an official way, in front of the Gods. And this sacred area, surrounded by the corral where the "Military Column" was located, for the Romans symbolized the opposing land. A sacred way to declare war. Imagine how in the past, when Rome was fighting with villages or populations set very close to the Eternal City, a "feziale" really used to throw a spear in the enemy field. But when Rome started to fight against people located very far from the city there was a problem. In what way could the "feziale" use his weapon? So, probably, the ancient Romans found this wonderful solution. To bring, in a religious and simbolic way, the opposing land here, directly in Rome! The "Military Column" became the target of the spear thrown by the "feziale" in order to symbolize the enemies. But now imagine how smart where the Romans. At the III century BC a war prisoner was forced to buy a small piece of land just in front of the Temple of Bellona. In this way, as you can understand, for the Romans was very easy to declare war. Clever, of course! #Roma #unaguidaturisticaroma #romeisus #Rome #archeologia #archeology #atourguiderome #temple #tempio #guerra #war
